J.C. and Margaret will give a brief history of and explain the properties of enamels and describe how they can be used in different ways in bead making. Margaret will focus on enamels applied out of the flame, as paint, to achieve high levels of detail. J.C. will focus on enamels applied in the flame, to achieve the bright color fades known in her work. Both artists will discuss their background, sources of inspiration, and will show a gallery of enameled beads. A brief description will also be given of how lampworked glass beads are made – with or without enamels!
Margaret lives in Tucson, AZ and has worked with glass since 2001. In 2004 she completed work for a Master’s degree in Entomology (another fascination with things small and colorful). In glass, Margaret has truly found her medium. The technique and chemistry of working with glass feeds the scientific mind while the freedom allowed by working with a molten medium nourishes the creative soul.
JC Herrell, born and raised in Wisconsin, has been a student of art since childhood. In 1996, she sought something to say in her art by choosing to study philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. JC was lead to lampwork bead making by a local stained glass store. In 2005, JC became a full time glass artist and is looking forward to a lifetime of exploring glass.
