Enormous changes have occurred in the pearl industry in recent years. Today it would be unusual to find a “natural” pearl, most pearls are “cultured” – where an irritant is introduced by man (the nucleus is inserted into the oyster/mussel by man) and the oysters are raised in a controlled environment, on mussel farms, either freshwater or saltwater. Damien will go over the differences between freshwater and saltwater pearls and show how the freshwater pearls are raised, how colors are induced and a wide variety of shapes are created.

A special feature of this seminar will be how to judge the quality of a pearl, including evaluating luster. Everyone will receive a small sampler of pearls so they will have a tangible way to shop for pearls in the future.
Wendy Masterson will show pearl stringing techniques for attendees who want to stay for this second part of the program.
